Greek Police seize over 270 kilos of cocaine worth €5.5 million
Authorities said the drugs were concealed inside a container of bananas imported from Ecuador. The operation followed a tip-off from the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, which alerted Greek police that a shipment carrying cocaine was headed to the northern port of Thessaloniki.
Officers located the shipment and removed most of the cocaine — packaged in brick-sized bundles — before the container was loaded onto a truck. The vehicle was later tracked to Aspropyrgos, an Athens suburb over 500 kilometers south of Thessaloniki, where police arrested three suspects as they opened the container on Saturday.
According to AP news article published in Kathimerini the seizure totaled 271.15 kilograms of cocaine. The suspects include two Greek nationals — a 40-year-old haulage company owner and a 32-year-old man — along with a 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen. Police say the Bulgarian coordinated with an international drug gang to arrange collection and transport of the container, while the 32-year-old was allegedly responsible for distributing the drugs through gang members.
Authorities are continuing investigations to identify other members of the trafficking network. The three men are expected to appear before a prosecutor on Monday.
