Greek Parliament approves third term for Central Bank Governor Yannis Stournaras
The Greek Parliament’s Public Enterprises Committee has approved the renewal of Yannis Stournaras for a third term as governor of the Bank of Greece, reinforcing continuity at the country’s central banking leadership during a period of ongoing economic transition.
The appointment was backed by lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party, who voted in favor of extending Stournaras’ tenure.
Mixed Political Reactions in Parliament
The center-left PASOK abstained from the vote, although party representative Paris Koukoulopoulos reportedly offered a positive assessment of Stournaras’ overall performance.
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) also chose to abstain.
Meanwhile, several opposition parties voted against the renewal, including:
- SYRIZA
- Greek Solution
- New Left
- NIKI
- Course of Freedom
Stournaras Remains Key Figure in Greek Economic Policy
Stournaras has served as governor of the Bank of Greece since 2014 and has played a central role in Greece’s financial stabilization efforts following the country’s sovereign debt crisis.
Widely regarded as one of Greece’s most influential economic policymakers, he has consistently advocated for fiscal discipline, banking sector stability, and structural reforms while also warning about inflationary pressures and global economic uncertainty in recent years.
His renewed mandate comes as Greece continues navigating challenges linked to public debt management, housing inflation, investment growth, and broader eurozone monetary conditions.
The approval ensures policy continuity at the Bank of Greece as the country seeks to maintain investor confidence and sustain post-crisis economic recovery momentum.
