Greek border guards save 27 migrants on the Turkish border
Border guards and rescue services today rescued 27 migrants stranded by a sandbank on the Maritsa River, on the border with Turkey.

Due to the high tide these people could no longer cross the river.

The migrants, whose identity is currently unknown, were taken to Greek territory to be registered.

Along the Maritsa River passes a route used by human traffickers who transport migrants from Turkey to Greece and therefore to the European Union. In recent years, many have drowned or frozen during this perilous journey.

Greek border guards and the European Border Agency Frontex are monitoring the area. Greece has also erected kilometer-long border fences in many places.

More than 1,000 migrants have crossed the border since the beginning of the year, the UN refugee agency said.

In 2021, 4,800 people illegally crossed the border, in 2020 it was almost 6,000.
