Greece should set the terms of dialogue with Türkiye, says Syriza MP Katrougalos
The earthquakes "created conditions for changing the [political] climate and promoting dialogue with Türkiye," noted SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance MP and the party's head for foreign affairs George Katrougalos on Monday.
"This is why we need a national strategy, and to be setting the agenda ourselves, instead of blindly following third parties' agendas, or awkwardly respond to Turkish proposals," Katrougalos added.
"Unfortunately," he added, "we are once again finding out - from the Turkish side - about developments regarding proposals that do not concern such a dialogue, which we have been promoting since 2021, when others were investing in the doctrine of an allegedly isolated Türkiye."
Katrougalos was referring to Saturday's reports of Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu telling Greek journalists that Türkiye has submitted a six-point proposal, which includes the continuation of exploratory talks, the discussion of confidence-building measures, and the continuation of talks within the NATO framework.
"What is this six-point proposal really all about," Katrougalos wondered, and "what was Greece's response?"
Cavusoglu had said that this proposal was raised during a recent meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's advisor Ibrahim Kalin and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' Diplomatic Office Director Anna-Maria Boura.
