Greece reacts to denial of Greek minority mayoral candidate's request for release

The Greek Foreign Ministry reacted against the denial of the release request of Alfred Beleri, the mayoral candidate of the Greek minority, who was detained before the local elections held on 14 May and arrested on 22 May.

In a statement released by the Ministry, it was stated that the rejection of Alfred Beleri's request for release to assume the mayoralty of Himara "prevents him from taking his oath of office".

The Greek Foreign Ministry is following the developments and expects Albania to respect Beleri's presumption of innocence, the statement said.

Beleri was detained on 12 May on charges of "active electoral corruption".

In the investigation conducted by the General Directorate of Security of Albania, it was noted that Beleri was suspected of being involved in vote-buying activities in which "citizens in Himara and its villages were offered certain amounts of money in exchange for voting for one of the candidates competing in the election".

In local elections held on 14 May, Beleri was elected Mayor of Himara.

The Albanian judiciary had decided on 22 May that Beleri would remain in detention throughout the investigation.

The detention of Beleri, a member of the Greek minority in the country, caused reactions from political parties and authorities in Albania and Greece.
