Greece and Albania seek stronger bilateral ties

Greece and Albania have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation and advancing regional stability, with officials from both countries highlighting significant opportunities for closer collaboration at a forum held in Tirana on Monday.

The Greek-Albanian Forum brought together business representatives, local government officials and education figures from both countries. The initiative was led by Greek Deputy Interior Minister responsible for Macedonia and Thrace, Kostas Gioulekas.

Participants highlighted the role of the Greek national minority in Albania and the Albanian community in Greece as bridges between the two countries.

Athens reiterates support for Albania’s EU accession

Albanian Parliament President Niko Peleshi praised Greece’s continued support for Albania’s European integration, expressing confidence in the development of bilateral relations.

“Greece has always been by Albania’s side, and we never forget this,” Peleshi said, adding that the two countries share strategic interests and cooperate as partners.

He also referred to Albania’s goal of completing negotiations in 2027 and achieving full EU membership by 2030.

In a recorded video message, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Harry Theoharis said Athens supports Albania’s European path on the basis of strict but fair conditionality, respect for the rule of law, the principle of merit and good neighbourly relations.

He stressed that the full protection of the rights of the Greek national minority in Albania, including property rights, remains an integral part of the European integration process.

Businesses urged to deepen cooperation

Gioulekas called for a forward-looking approach to relations between the two countries, arguing that historical divisions should give way to cooperation and shared opportunities for future generations.

“Many years have passed since the Balkans were divided by rivalries, passions, and nationalisms that created tensions across Europe. These belong to history; challenges lie ahead of us, new generations lie ahead of us,” he said.

Greek Ambassador to Albania Lamprini Komini also urged businesses in both countries to expand investment and establish new partnerships.

She said closer commercial ties could contribute to economic growth and prosperity in Greece and Albania, stressing the need for more partnerships and fewer obstacles while taking advantage of their geographical and other forms of proximity.

The forum underscored the importance of economic cooperation, minority rights and European integration in shaping the next phase of Greek-Albanian relations.
