Greek health authorities have confirmed the country's first human case of West Nile virus infection for 2026, marking the start of this year's seasonal surveillance period.
The case was identified in a patient in the Attica region, according to public health authorities. Officials have intensified mosquito surveillance and control measures while urging the public to take precautions against mosquito bites, particularly during the summer months.
West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While most infections are asymptomatic or cause mild flu-like symptoms, severe neurological complications can occur, especially among older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
Health authorities stressed that surveillance and preventive measures remain in place across the country following the first confirmed case of the season.
