Greece backs Somalia’s territorial integrity, breaks with Israel on Somaliland
Greece has voiced opposition to Israel’s unilateral recognition of Somaliland, reaffirming its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, a position rooted in its long-standing stance against the recognition of breakaway states.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, Greece’s permanent representative, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, warned against initiatives that could destabilize Somalia, without directly naming Israel. Greece is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
Balta said actions that introduce “unnecessary turmoil” in Somalia risk undermining political, security and humanitarian progress and could threaten stability in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
Greek officials are concerned that Israel’s move could set a precedent encouraging similar actions elsewhere.
