Gerapetritis: Türkiye plays a key role in the Middle East

Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis highlighted Türkiye’s pivotal role in the Middle East and outlined Greece’s priorities for its new term on the UN Security Council.
In an interview with the Greek state agency AMNA, Gerapetritis referred to Turkey as an “active player” in the region due to its geographic proximity to Syria and other Middle Eastern countries.
A New Era at the UN Security Council
As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Greece aims to act as a “bridge” between North and South, East and West, according to Gerapetritis. He emphasized Greece’s focus on peaceful conflict resolution, adherence to international law, protection of children in armed conflicts, combating the climate crisis, and ensuring maritime security. The minister also stressed the importance of enhancing women’s roles in security and stability efforts.
Policies on Syria and the Middle East
Gerapetritis acknowledged Türkiye’s critical position in the region, particularly in developments concerning Syria. He stated Greece’s commitment to preventing adverse outcomes in the area, with specific attention to protecting the Greek minority in Syria, facilitating the voluntary return of Syrian refugees, and curbing new migration flows.
Türkiye-Greece Relations and the Cyprus Issue
Reflecting on improved relations between Türkiye and Greece over the past 18 months, Gerapetritis expressed hope for further cooperation. He reiterated Greece’s commitment to keeping the Cyprus issue at the forefront of international discussions, emphasizing the goal of a unified Cyprus.
He commended the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in seeking solutions, stating, “A united European Cyprus will not only benefit its citizens but also serve as a powerful symbol for the world.”
Through its role at the UN Security Council, Greece aims to contribute to regional stability while advancing its foreign policy objectives.
