Four arrested over Paros landfill fire investigation
Greek authorities have arrested four people, including the mayor of Paros, as part of an investigation into a fire that broke out at the island's landfill site and continues to burn in scattered hotspots.
Those arrested are the mayor, the deputy mayor responsible for sanitation, a contractor working with the local waste management authority and a municipal garbage truck driver, according to local media reports.
The arrests were made during the preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire. Investigators are examining whether any actions or omissions may have contributed to the incident.
The fire, which started on Tuesday at the landfill, remains under monitoring as firefighting teams continue to deal with isolated active hotspots.
As of the time of publication, neither the Hellenic Fire Service nor the Greek Police had issued an official statement confirming the arrests or detailing the specific charges, if any, faced by those detained.
The investigation remains ongoing.
