FM Gerapetritis: Dialogue with Türkiye will not be stopped
The Greek government remains committed to maintaining open channels of communication with Türkiye, despite the postponement of a planned meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis confirmed on Wednesday.
Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, Gerapetritis clarified that the meeting was postponed due to scheduling conflicts, noting that both sides had attempted to find a mutually convenient time, but were ultimately unsuccessful.
“There was a scheduled meeting between the two leaders. It is obvious that the schedule changed due to meetings that were extremely important,” he said. “An attempt was made to identify a mutually convenient time for the meeting; however, it appears that this effort was unsuccessful.”
He stressed, however, that the postponement does not signal a breakdown in diplomatic engagement.
“There is no intention to cease the dialogue,” the minister stated, underlining that Athens seeks to pursue a “structured dialogue” with Ankara.
Gerapetritis added that a new opportunity for a meeting between Mitsotakis and Erdogan is expected to arise in the near future, as both governments continue efforts to improve bilateral relations.
The meeting was anticipated as part of a broader process of rapprochement between Greece and Türkiye, following a series of high-level contacts aimed at easing long-standing tensions over issues including maritime boundaries, airspace, and regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
