Europe at a turning point, says Mitsotakis

Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Emmanuel Macron discussed Europe’s future at the Roman Agora, with Mitsotakis describing the current moment as a key opportunity for Europe to strengthen its global role and strategic autonomy.

He stressed that Europe must boost defense spending in a smarter, more coordinated way and build a stronger defense industry. On the economy, he pointed to the Draghi report as a guide for improving competitiveness, noting that Europe can achieve more through cooperation and better use of private investment, especially in the fragmented energy market.

Mitsotakis also highlighted the need to regulate social media, protect young users, and address risks linked to artificial intelligence and online anonymity.

Referring to Donald Trump, he acknowledged that Europe has lagged in defense spending, while noting Greece as an exception. He said Europe should not rely solely on NATO, but strengthen its own capabilities while maintaining strong transatlantic ties. He also warned of pressure from China.

On energy, Mitsotakis called for lower costs and greater investment in renewables and nuclear power, citing reduced dependence on Russia as a priority.

The discussion was part of an event organized by Kathimerini titled “Challenges for Europe: The Way Ahead.”
