‘Enough with the butts!’ WWF targets cigarette litter on beaches
Environmental group WWF Hellas has launched a new awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of cigarette butts, which continue to litter Greece’s beaches every summer.
According to the organization, cigarette butts are the most common form of plastic pollution found on Greek coastlines, with an average of 50 discarded every 100 meters.
Composed of plastic and containing more than 7,000 chemical compounds, each butt can take up to 14 years to decompose. Beyond littering the shore, many of these butts end up in the sea, where they pose a serious threat to marine life, the environment and public health
WWF is urging beachgoers – particularly smokers – to dispose of their cigarette waste responsibly and help protect Greece’s fragile coastal ecosystems.
