Educators decry evictions of refugee families from state shelters in Greece

The Platform of Refugee Education Coordinators in Greece has issued a strong statement condemning a recent decision by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum to evict certain refugee families from state-run accommodation facilities.
According to the platform’s announcement, the ministry’s decision targets families whose asylum applications have been rejected on appeal, as well as individuals who have already been granted asylum, ordering their removal from state shelters within a short timeframe.
The educators warned that the move would displace hundreds of refugee students once again, disrupting their education and stability. “These children are trying to survive amid war, poverty, and exclusion. For them, school is not only about education—it’s a way to reclaim their childhood,” the statement read.
The platform emphasized that many places remain vacant in the shelters, and described the evictions as unacceptable, particularly in the absence of alternative housing solutions.
It urged the Greek government to strengthen its integration policies, ensure dignified housing in urban areas, and guarantee refugees' access to education and healthcare.
