Deaths from cancer breaking records in Greece!

According to the annual report of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) "Health at a Glance 2023", the number of deaths from cancer in our country is 22,256 and it is understood that this disease causes 20% of all deaths in the country.

It was stated that in our country, where cancer deaths are more effective on men, the ratio of deaths to population is above the international average.

According to 2021 data, there are 208 cancer deaths per 100,000 inhabitants per year in Greece, i.e. a total of 22,256 deaths.

The difference in mortality rates between men and women is striking.

There are 150 deaths per 100,000 in women and 230 in men.

According to the report, cancer was the second leading cause of death after circulatory diseases, accounting for 21 per cent of deaths in OECD countries in 2021.

Cancer-related deaths were lung cancer (20 per cent), colon cancer (10.9 per cent), breast cancer (14.7 per cent in women) and prostate cancer (10.1 per cent in men).

These four forms of the disease account for almost 44 per cent of all cancers diagnosed in OECD countries.

Smoking is the main risk factor for lung cancer.

Colorectal cancer is also the leading cause of death for both men and women, accounting for 10.9% of cancer-related deaths for both sexes.

According to the information contained in the report, it was observed that colorectal cancer cases have increased in young patients in many OECD countries in recent years.

In addition, breast cancer was found to be the second most common cause of death from cancer in women with a rate of 14.7 per cent.

In the last decade, it is stated that breast cancer case rates have increased and mortality rates have decreased or stabilised due to early diagnosis and correct treatment.
