Controlled drug use center to open in central Athens
Greece is launching its first open-site supervised drug use facility in the Votanikos industrial zone of Athens, signaling a shift from the exclusive pursuit of drug policies to crack down on use and detoxification to harm reduction. The center will provide a controlled environment where users can inject drugs with sterile equipment and immediate medical support.
The initiative, jointly developed by the Ministries of Health and Citizen Protection, aims to reduce public drug use and improve safety near central hotspots like Karolou Street and the National Theater. Use will occur in specially designed containers with mobile health units and street workers offering clean syringes and emergency aid.
Deputy Health Minister Dimitris Vartzopoulos has visited the site, while authorities plan to transport users from central Athens and inform them of the program’s benefits.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas noted cooperation with Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, calling the effort crucial to reclaim public spaces.
