Concert in Athens supports global sumud flotilla to Gaza
The event, organized by local NGOs, brought together citizens who expressed solidarity with Palestine and called for an end to Israel’s siege on Gaza.
Participants waved numerous Palestinian flags and carried banners reading “Stop the genocide, freedom for Palestine.”
Before the concert, activists addressed the audience, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and urging an end to Israel’s attacks. Attendees also chanted slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine.”
Historical context of the Palestinian struggle was shared through speeches, while photos and videos displayed on a large screen illustrated the current situation in Gaza.
The concert also served as a collection point for essential goods to be sent to Gaza. Volunteers gathered flour, pasta, canned food, baby formula, diapers, and hygiene products brought by participants.
With music and performances, the event conveyed a message of peace for Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla
Backed by activists from over 44 countries, the Global Sumud Flotilla is an international civilian aid initiative aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The flotilla departed from Barcelona, Spain, earlier today, bound for Gaza.
The word “Sumud” — meaning “steadfastness” or “unwavering determination” in Arabic — became a powerful symbol of Palestinian resilience after the 1967 Six-Day War. It reflects the determination of Palestinians to remain on their land, preserve their identity and culture, and resist occupation through nonviolent means, civil disobedience, and the creation of alternative institutions. Olive trees and pregnant rural women are often used as metaphors to represent the concept of Sumud.
