On December 3, 2024, Apostolos Tzitziikostas resigned from his position as the Regional Governor of Central Macedonia following his appointment as the European Union Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism.
Apostolos Tzitziikostas resigns from Central Macedonia Regional Presidency

In light of his resignation, a 15-day election process has been initiated to select a new regional president for Central Macedonia. According to the law, any of the 40 members of the Central Macedonia Regional Council can run for the position. The candidate who secures 21 votes in the first round will be elected as the regional president. If no candidate reaches the required votes, a second round of voting will take place. If a winner still is not determined, the candidate with the most votes from the previous rounds will be declared the regional president in a third vote.

Going forward, Tzitzikostas will take on his new role as the European Union Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism.
