Schools remained closed today (March 9) in the municipalities of Ioannina and Igoumenitsa until safety inspections are completed. Educational facilities are also closed in the municipalities of Filiates and Souli.

The quake, which occurred at a shallow depth, was widely felt across the region and startled residents, many of whom left their homes during the early-morning tremor. Aftershocks continued, with seismologists, including Efthymios Lekkas, closely monitoring the situation.

Initial assessments reported damage to several buildings, particularly in the villages of Polydroso in Souli and Dodoni. Two churches sustained significant cracks, while a school building suffered roof damage. At least four houses were also affected, including one that has developed a tilt and requires immediate inspection.

A regional team of engineers is expected to conduct on-site inspections to assess building safety and evaluate the extent of the damage. Debris such as bricks and roofing materials has fallen in several areas, prompting authorities to urge caution as seismic activity continues.
