The highly contagious sheep pox virus has reached Kilkis, with two confirmed cases reported in the village of Agios Petros, local authorities announced this week.

Veterinary officials confirmed the disease following reports from two local farmers. In response, around 300 animals were culled to contain the spread.

This marks the first appearance of the virus in the northern regional unit. The ongoing outbreak, now in its 14th month, has already resulted in the culling of over 260,000 sheep and goats nationwide—about 2% of the national herd—and the closure of 1,100 farms.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely amid efforts to prevent further spread.
