Greece announces €450 million housing relief package
The government has unveiled a €450 million housing support plan to ease pressure on renters and homeowners amid rising housing costs. The measures are part of the 2026 draft state budget, presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
“One Rent” Refund in November
The first measure, coming into effect in November 2025, offers a cash refund equal to one month’s rent for over 1 million tenants, including students. Based on 2024 rent declarations, the amount can reach up to €800. Around 80% of renters are expected to qualify under income and property criteria.
Eight More Measures in 2026
Tax breaks to encourage leasing of vacant properties
30–35% reduction in presumptive taxation for housing
New rental tax brackets to support long-term leasing
ENFIA property tax cuts in 12,720 rural areas
Support for modern social housing initiatives
Extension of renovation-related tax deductions
Continued VAT suspension on new buildings through 2026
Ongoing restrictions on short-term rentals in central Athens
The plan aims to increase housing availability, promote affordability, and support both tenants and property owners. Further details on eligibility and implementation are expected soon.
