Global food prices declined by 0.4% in January, marking the fifth consecutive monthly drop, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The food price index fell to 123.9 points, mainly due to lower prices for dairy, sugar, and meat.
Dairy prices dropped 5% amid oversupply, while sugar fell 1% due to improved production in India and positive outlooks in Thailand. Meat prices eased by 0.4% as global demand slowed. In contrast, vegetable oil prices rose 2.1%, and cereal prices edged up 0.2%, supported by higher rice prices.
The FAO also revised its 2025 global cereal production forecast upward to 3.023 billion tons and said global grain stocks could reach their highest level since 2001.
