Construction begins on North Macedonia section of Greece–North Macedonia gas interconnector
The 67-kilometre section, stretching from Negotino to the border with Greece, was inaugurated during a ceremony held near the city of Negotino.
The event was attended by Prime Minister of North Macedonia Hristijan Mickoski, alongside ambassadors from the United States, the European Union, and Greece, as well as representatives from key energy and financial institutions including NOMAGAS, DESFA, SRBIJAGAS, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The interconnector, with a total planned length of 123 kilometres, includes a 56-kilometre Greek section running from Nea Mesimvria, Thessaloniki, to the Evzonoi-Gevgelija border. From there, it connects with the 67-kilometre stretch inside North Macedonia, terminating in Negotino.
Designed to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on a single supplier, the pipeline will initially carry 1.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, with the capacity to expand to 3 billion cubic metres in the future.
Officials highlighted the strategic importance of the project not only for bilateral cooperation between Greece and North Macedonia, but also for broader regional energy integration in Southeast Europe.
“This is a clear sign that the Balkans are moving forward—toward stronger infrastructure, deeper cooperation, and sustainable development,” said Prime Minister Mickoski.
The gas interconnector is expected to contribute to energy diversification, lower prices for consumers, and support the transition to cleaner energy sources across the region.
