Airbnb: Six steps to avoid online scams

As online holiday bookings grow in popularity, so too do scams targeting travelers. The Bank of Greece has reported 349,000 fraud cases involving electronic transactions in the past year—a 4% increase compared to 2023. With many travelers opting for short-term rental platforms like Airbnb, the risk of falling victim to fraud is rising.

Scams can range from fake websites and phishing emails to direct payment fraud. In response, Airbnb has stepped up its security protocols and issued six essential tips to help users protect themselves from common online traps:

1. Always Check the URL
Ensure you’re using the official Airbnb website: www.airbnb.gr or the official Airbnb mobile app. Avoid search engine links or unofficial booking sites.

2. Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links
Scammers often target users through social media messages or fake posts. If you're unsure whether a link is legitimate, don’t click. Always verify through Airbnb's official channels.

3. Be Wary of Unrealistic Offers
If a listing looks too good to be true—like very low prices or extravagant promises—approach with caution. Cross-check similar listings and prices before making any decisions.

4. Never Pay via Bank Transfer
Airbnb only processes payments through its platform. If someone asks for a direct bank transfer or payment outside the platform, it’s a red flag. Report the request to Airbnb immediately.

5. Keep Everything on the Platform
To ensure you're covered under Airbnb’s AirCover protection and refund policy, all bookings, messages, and payments must go through the official website or app.

6. Vet Listings and Read Reviews
Before booking, take time to read guest reviews, check ratings, and carefully go through the listing description. Prior guests' feedback can reveal a lot about the reliability of a host and property.

As scams become increasingly sophisticated, travelers are urged to stay vigilant and informed. Booking through secure channels and following these guidelines can drastically reduce the risk of falling prey to fraud.
