Sarajevo Siege families honor children killed in Gaza
In Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, families who lost their children during the 1992–1995 siege of the city held a memorial for children killed in Gaza by Israeli attacks.
The event was organized by the Association of Families of Children Killed During the Sarajevo Siege and was attended by Sarajevan families who lost children during the conflict, as well as local citizens. Participants marched along Marshal Tito Street carrying Palestinian and Bosnian flags, gathering at the Children’s Memorial and the Eternal Flame Monument.
During the ceremony, the names of children killed in both Sarajevo and Gaza were read aloud. Association President Fikret Grabovica highlighted that children continue to die in Gaza and drew parallels between the siege of Sarajevo and the situation in Gaza.
Grabovica stressed the importance of remembering these tragedies to educate younger generations, saying, “Knowing the events of the siege is not about fostering hatred or seeking revenge, but to prevent similar suffering from happening again.” He added that over 17,000 children have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, while 1,601 children lost their lives during the Sarajevo siege.
