A memorial event was held in the Dutch city of Den Bosch on Sunday to commemorate Palestinian children and journalists killed in Gaza.

Organized by the Plant an Olive Tree Foundation in the city's central Markt Square, the event featured photographs and names of journalists killed in the conflict, while thousands of children's shoes were displayed across the square.

Participants read aloud the names and ages of children killed in Gaza, and volunteers distributed information about the situation in the enclave.

Call for action

Esther van der Most, a director of the foundation, said the event was the 17th memorial for Palestinian children and the fifth dedicated to journalists killed in Gaza.

She said the first memorial, held in Rotterdam in December 2023, displayed 8,000 pairs of shoes, adding that the number of children killed has since risen to 21,000.

Van der Most called on the Dutch government to take stronger action against Israel, including sanctions, and said the event aimed to keep attention on the victims of the conflict.

She also highlighted the deaths of journalists in Gaza, saying more than 300 media workers had been killed.

Heavy toll of war

The Gaza war has caused widespread casualties and destruction since October 2023, with tens of thousands of Palestinians killed or injured and large-scale damage to civilian infrastructure, according to Palestinian authorities.
