Parental controls aim to curb digital dangers
The government is set to introduce a parental control platform for children under 15, aiming to safeguard them from the dangers of unsupervised internet and social media use.
Social Cohesion and Family Minister Sofia Zacharaki announced the initiative in comments to Skai TV on Wednesday, highlighting concerns over digital addiction and isolation.
The platform will enable parents to block specific websites using keywords and monitor their children’s online interactions.
Zacharaki acknowledged that while banning social media entirely is impractical, increased oversight is essential as children often retreat into virtual worlds, fostering risks like depression and detachment from reality.
The government has already imposed school restrictions on mobile phones and plans to adopt stricter measures to protect minors. Zacharaki emphasized that technology, when regulated, can be a tool for good.
The initiative reflects a broader European trend toward tighter online regulations for minors, as parents express mixed feelings, balancing concerns about safety and the social benefits of technology.
