Serbia announces snap election dates

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced the first possible dates for the country’s snap parliamentary elections, saying voters will go to the polls on either October 18 or October 25.

“Serbia will go to the polls on October 18 or 25. We will know which date in the coming days,” Vucic said during a television programme.

Ruling party prepares for election

Vucic said the Serbian Progressive Party, which he helped found, would seek to secure a parliamentary majority, adding that the final outcome would depend on the will of voters.

“Democratic elections are vital for us,” Vucic said, describing the people as the ultimate authority in deciding who should govern the country.

He had previously said that the election would be announced soon and that the campaign would last between 45 and 60 days.

Presidential vote to follow

Vucic also said a presidential election would be held after the parliamentary vote, with December, January or early February considered possible dates.

His second presidential term is due to expire next May. Under Serbia’s constitution, Vucic cannot seek a third presidential term.

In June, he said he planned to resign “soon” and was considering running for prime minister.

Protests put pressure on government

Vucic and his government have faced sustained political pressure since the collapse of a concrete canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people.

The tragedy triggered prolonged anti-government protests and calls for the resignation of Vucic and the government he supports.

The snap parliamentary election is expected to be a major test for the ruling party as Serbia faces continued political tensions and pressure over its domestic and European direction.
