Nymfaia Border Crossing now open for transit
The Nymfaia border crossing, operational for the past 12 years, has allowed free vehicle transit between Greece and Bulgaria since January 1, 2025. This development aligns with Bulgaria and Romania’s entry into the Schengen Agreement, promising both opportunities and challenges for the region.
Easier Tourist Entry
The removal of restrictions is expected to reduce delays that previously deterred tourists, especially during the summer. By November 2024, 744,457 crossings were recorded at Nymfaia, a number significantly lower than the 1.67 million crossings in the record-breaking year of 2019.
Challenges and Risks
Despite the progress, concerns remain about the potential increase in smuggling, while buses and trucks are still not permitted to pass. Local authorities, including Deputy Regional Governor Mr. Manolis Tapatzas, express optimism that this change will boost the local economy and tourist flow.
Police presence continues to monitor potential issues, and it is hoped that infrastructure improvements will fully realize the border crossing’s potential.
