Montenegrin authorities have launched an investigation after graffiti praising convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić was sprayed on the walls of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Embassy in the capital, Podgorica.

The slogans, written overnight with spray paint, included messages such as “General, thank you for Srebrenica,” referring to the 1995 genocide in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim civilians were killed. A 16-year-old suspect has been detained in connection with the incident.

Prosecutors said the graffiti glorified Mladić, who was convicted for genocide and crimes against humanity, and announced legal proceedings on suspicion of inciting national, religious, and ethnic hatred. Police are treating the act as a disturbance of public order, and the suspect is expected to appear before the Podgorica Misdemeanor Court.

Police emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward hate speech and hate crimes, stressing the importance of protecting public order, human rights, and social cohesion. Authorities also noted that a nationalist “4S” symbol, associated with Serbian extremist groups, was drawn on the embassy sign.
