Call for voter turnout among dual citizens in Türkiye ahead of Bulgaria Elections
With parliamentary elections set for April 19, 2026, in Bulgaria, a prominent civil society leader has urged dual citizens living in Türkiye to participate actively in the vote, emphasizing the importance of democratic representation.
“Go to the Polls” Appeal from Community Leader
Erol Ateş, President of the Kırklareli Balkan Turks Immigrants Solidarity Association, called on eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights and head to the ballot box.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ateş highlighted that Bulgaria has held eight elections since 2021, reflecting ongoing political instability and short-lived governments. The upcoming vote will mark the ninth trip to the polls in just a few years.
Elections Seen as Critical Moment
Ateş stressed that the April 19 election carries heightened importance, particularly for dual citizens seeking stronger political representation:
“No matter the circumstances, they must not give up their democratic rights. They should vote at the nearest polling station available to them. This election is always important—but this time, it is even more so.”
Criticism Over Polling Limitations
The association leader also criticized restrictions imposed by Bulgarian authorities on polling stations for dual citizens abroad, arguing that such limitations could discourage participation. Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence that voters would still fulfill their civic duties.
“We Must Show We Will Not Relinquish Our Rights”
Encouraging resilience among voters, Ateş called for high turnout despite election fatigue:
“Even though we have gone to the polls eight times already, we must not say ‘we are tired.’ We must show that we will not relinquish our democratic rights.”
He also noted that long queues could be expected but argued that strong participation could lead to an increase in polling stations in future elections.
Symbolic Reference to Naim Süleymanoğlu
Invoking the legacy of Naim Süleymanoğlu, Ateş encouraged perseverance:
“He faced great challenges but never gave up. As voters and younger generations following his path, we must also not give up.”
Ongoing Outreach Efforts
Ateş added that his organization has been actively informing dual citizens ahead of the elections, conducting outreach campaigns to boost awareness and turnout among the diaspora community.
