In Bulgaria, data from the National Social Security Institute (NOI) and the National Statistical Institute (NSI) show that the population is ageing and declining.
Bulgaria's population dwindling

In the statement made by NOI regarding the data, it was pointed out that the population was 6 million 520 thousand in 2021, when the last census was conducted, and it was stated that the number of pensioners will increase by 12,300 this year and will reach 2 million 39 thousand in 2024.

In the statement, which also mentioned the impact of the Covid-19 factor, it was reminded that the population decreased to 6 million 447 thousand at the end of 2022.

Population could fall to 4.9 million by 2075

In the statement made by the NSI, it was emphasised that demographic problems continue and that the population is expected to decrease to 4.9 million in 2075, and that citizens aged 65 and over are expected to constitute 25.5 per cent of the population.

While Bulgaria's population was around 8 million in 1989, when the communist era ended, around 2 million people emigrated to other countries after Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007.
