World’s highest bridge opens in China’s Guizhou province
The bridge surpasses the nearby Beipanjiang Bridge, which held the previous record at 565 meters. The Huajiang Bridge features a 1,420-meter main span, making it the largest-span bridge constructed in a mountainous area.
State media broadcast live footage of vehicles crossing the structure, whose blue towers disappear into the clouds. The bridge will dramatically reduce travel time across the canyon from two hours to just two minutes, according to Zhang Yin, head of Guizhou’s transport department.
Guizhou is known for its rugged terrain and is home to nearly half of the world’s 100 highest bridges. The Huajiang Bridge took over three years to complete and is part of China’s ongoing push to improve infrastructure and regional connectivity.
While it holds the title for the highest bridge, the tallest structure bridge remains France’s Millau Viaduct, standing 343 meters tall.
