UN: “Let's be humane and compassionate”
UNHCR Spokesperson Mantoo reacted to the double standards of some Western countries towards refugees.

UNHCR Spokesperson Mantoo, reacting to the double standards of some Western countries towards refugees, said, "It doesn't matter what their (refugees') identity is or where they come from. Let's be a little more humane and compassionate" he called.

While more than 660,000 people who left Ukraine during the Russia-Ukraine war had to seek refuge in neighboring countries, the statements of politicians and journalists from some Western countries that openly discriminated against refugees drew criticism. In these statements, the use of "Whites, Europeans" comments for Ukrainian refugees and the use of derogatory expressions for Syrians and Afghan refugees drew attention.

"To be honest, these are not refugees from Syria. These are refugees from Ukraine. Christians, whites, they look alike," a journalist on a leading US news channel said during the broadcast. His statement became a hot topic on social media.

Answering the AA reporter's question at the press conference held at the UN Geneva Office, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Spokesperson Shabia Mantoo said, "No one wants to be a refugee. No one wants to leave their home forcibly and have to flee in search of safety. This is truly devastating. situation".

Noting the similar challenges faced by all refugees, Mantoo stressed that "inhumane" news that discriminates against refugees would not benefit anyone.

"Let's be humane and compassionate"

Spokesperson Mantoo continued:

"We really don't need that kind of rhetoric. It's really tragic for refugees from Ukraine, refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and other countries as well. So the point is, at the end of the day, we have to remember that they're all human. "

Emphasizing that hate speech can endanger the lives of refugees, "It doesn't matter what their (refugees') identity is or where they come from. Let's be a little more humane and compassionate." Mantoo said.

Answering the same question, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Spokesperson Liz Throssell said, "It goes without saying that such comments should not exist."

Throssell pointed out that statements that discriminate against refugees from different scountries do not benefit anyone.
