Trump claims Iran nuclear capability ‘Obliterated’ as tensions rise in Gulf
US President Donald Trump said American strikes had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear potential, while signaling possible further action to secure enriched uranium believed buried at targeted sites.
Trump told reporters US forces may need to enter Iran to recover nuclear material trapped under debris following last year’s strikes, claiming Tehran would be unable to access it under ongoing US surveillance.
“They have no chance,” Trump said, asserting Iran privately acknowledges its weakened position despite public statements.
Ceasefire under strain
The president declined to define what would constitute a violation of the current ceasefire, warning: “You’ll find out.” He added Iranian leaders understand the limits required to maintain the truce.
Trump also said Iran is under pressure to reach a diplomatic agreement, describing its military as “totally gone” and urging Tehran to avoid further escalation.
Sanctions and economic pressure
Highlighting US economic measures, Trump said sanctions are driving Iran’s economy toward collapse, citing high inflation and a weakened currency. He described the restrictions as unprecedented.
Iran tightens control over key waterway
Separately, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned vessels to follow designated routes through the Strait of Hormuz or face “decisive action,” calling the corridor the only safe passage.
A senior Guard official said ships must obtain Iranian authorization to transit the strategic waterway, signaling stricter control amid rising regional tensions.
Escalation in the Gulf
The warning follows renewed hostilities, including reported Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates, which said its air defenses intercepted incoming threats.
Tensions have remained high since US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year, with retaliatory actions disrupting maritime traffic.
A ceasefire brokered in April has yet to produce a lasting agreement, despite extensions, while a US naval blockade on Iranian shipping continues.
