Scottish Prime Minister Hamza Yusuf resigns
"I have come to the conclusion that repairing our relationship beyond the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm. I have therefore notified the SNP's national secretary of my intention to step down as party leader and asked him to launch a leadership contest for my successor as soon as possible," Hamza Yusuf said at a press conference in Edinburgh.
Yusuf said he would continue to serve as first minister until his successor was elected.
Hamza Yusuf was Scotland's first Muslim First Minister
Yusuf, who won the leadership race that started after the resignation of former Scottish Regional First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon on 27 March 2023, was sworn in two days later and officially took office on 29 March and became "Scotland's first Muslim prime minister".
Hamza Yusuf's father was of Pakistani origin and emigrated to Scotland in the 1960s, while his mother was born in Kenya to a South Asian family.
