More homeless people in Brussels
In the data shared with the AA correspondent by Bruss'help, an umbrella organisation working on homeless people in Brussels, it was stated that the number of homeless people increased by 18.9 percent compared to 2020, when the last count was made.
It was stated that 7,134 people with homeless and poor housing conditions were identified in 2022, but data on new categories such as "those temporarily staying with third parties" and "those threatened with eviction" were added to this number.
It was stated that without these categories, the number of people living on the streets was 6,317.
It was noted that 53.8 per cent of these people reported that they had been homeless for at least one year. It was stated that 78 per cent of those living on the street were single, 13 per cent had children and 42.7 per cent were Belgian.
The real number is much higher
"The real situation is much worse than the figures show," the organisation said in a statement. However, it helps us to make an inventory of the situation."
Successive counts in Belgium show a steady increase in the number of homeless people over the past 14 years.
