Good news for minorities from the European Court of Justice
The European Court of Justice rejected the annulment of the decision to register the "Minorities Protection Package" by the EU Commission.
The European Court of Justice rejected the annulment of the decision to register the "Minorities Protection Package" by the EU Commission. It was reported that this development, which is a final decision, is a pleasing development for minorities.
The European Union (EU) Court of Justice rejected Romania's appeal against the decision of the Federal Union of European Nations (FUEN) to register the European Citizens' Initiative titled "Minority Protection Package (MSPI)" by the European Union (EU) Commission in 2017.
With its decision, the Grand Chamber of the EU Court of Justice confirmed the first rejection of Romania's application for the annulment of the EU Commission's MSPI registration decision made in 2017, and it is the final decision in the case in question.
Regarding the issue, Halit Habipoğulları, President of the European Western Thrace Turkish Federation (ABTTF), said, “The final decision of the EU Court of Justice is very pleasing for national and linguistic minorities in the EU and is a positive sign for the future of MSPI. As it is known, the EU Commission, with its decision in January 2021, announced that it would not take any action regarding the nine legislative proposals in the MSPI supported by the European Parliament. However, with the aforementioned final decision, it was once again underlined that the protection of the rights of minorities and the strengthening of cultural and linguistic diversity are among the values and objectives of the EU and should be taken into account in the EU's work. The EU Commission should review the MSPI in the light of the last decision of the EU Court of Justice, and take action on the legal proposals in MSPI that will enable the establishment of a minority protection mechanism at the EU level.”s
