Global criticism over Israel’s death penalty law

The Palestinian Authority has strongly condemned a newly passed Israeli law allowing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, describing it as a “war crime” and a violation of international humanitarian law.

In a statement reported by WAFA, officials argued the legislation breaches the Fourth Geneva Convention, which guarantees protections and fair trial rights for individuals under occupation.

Officials described the measure as “racist”

Palestinian leaders and factions, including the Fatah movement and Hamas, warned that the law could escalate tensions and further endanger Palestinian prisoners. Officials described the measure as “racist” and accused Israel of institutionalizing policies such as extrajudicial killings, medical neglect, and torture. Calls were made for international intervention, including sanctions and accountability measures.

The law, approved by the Knesset in a 62–48 vote, permits Israeli courts to impose capital punishment on Palestinian detainees. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the legislation.

Jordan and Slovenia condemn the decision

International reactions have also been critical. Jordan denounced the law as “racist, discriminatory and illegitimate,” arguing it violates international legal norms and undermines Palestinian rights, including self-determination. Meanwhile, Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon called the measure discriminatory, warning that justice and security cannot be achieved through unequal treatment or capital punishment.

The legislation has intensified international debate over legal and human rights concerns in the region, with critics warning it could further destabilize an already tense situation.
