Xanthi Turkish Union: Greece to implement the ECtHR decisions

In the statement made by the Xanthi Turkish Union, after the decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Greece was called to respect the international law.

In the statement, while demanding the implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding Western Thrace Turkish minority associations, it was stated that the concepts of democracy and human rights in Western Thrace would be seriously damaged if the insistence on the non-implementation of the decisions of the ECtHR continues.

The statement made by the Xanthi Turkish Union is as follows:

As Xanthi Turkish Union, we expect Greece to implement the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding Western Thrace Turkish minority associations, taking into account the latest decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

We find it important to keep this issue on the agenda and to resolve it, that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to send a letter to the Greek authorities expressing their deep concern about the ECtHR judgments that were not implemented by Greece and inviting Greece to take swiftly the measures to ensure the full and effective implementation of the ECtHR judgments.

The Committee also urged the Greek authorities to consider changing the system for registration of associations, in line with the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the 2014 joint directives of the Venice Commission and OSCE on freedom of association.

We also welcome the Committee of Ministers' request from Greece to amend the legislation on the registration of associations.

As the Xanthi Turkish Union, which has been continuing its struggle for rights for years and making efforts to end the victimization it has been exposed to, we, as Xanthi Turkish Union, take into account the last decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, from Greece to comply with international law and fully implement the decisions of the ECHR. We demand that the Union take concrete steps to restore its legal status and legal personality.

Disregarding the rules of international law, ignoring the warnings and calls of the Council of Europe, and as a result, the persistence of the insistence on not implementing the ECtHR judgments will cause a serious injury to the concepts of democracy and human rights in Western Thrace.

This situation, on the other hand, will continue to pose a major obstacle to the establishment of a sense of trust between the state and the Western Thrace Turkish Minority.

As the Xanthi Turkish Union, we hereby reiterate our call for democracy, human rights and respect to international law

We respectfully announce to the public that we expect our rightful demands to be taken into account.
