Upgrade works continue at Kipi border crossing in Meriç

Renovation and expansion works at the Kipi (Kipoi) road border crossing in Meriç (Evros), northeastern Greece, are progressing, with construction under way on new inspection facilities, road infrastructure and parking areas aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing waiting times for travellers and freight transport.

Georgios Kellis, the Coordinator for the Restoration and Reconstruction of Meriç, visited the border crossing on Wednesday, October 7, to review the progress of the project and receive an update on the next stages of construction.

A site representative briefed him on the work completed so far and the construction activities currently under way.

NEW INSPECTION FACILITIES TAKING SHAPE
Work is continuing on the formwork and steel reinforcement for the foundations of the new phytosanitary inspection building. Foundation work on the veterinary inspection building is nearing completion, after which construction of its steel structural frame is scheduled to begin.

Concrete and masonry work has been completed on the new narcotics control building.

ROAD AND PARKING INFRASTRUCTURE ADVANCES
The first asphalt layer has been laid along most of the new peripheral road leading towards Gemisti. Roadbed construction is continuing on the remaining section.

Meanwhile, embankment work for the heavy-vehicle parking area, located east of the phytosanitary and veterinary inspection buildings, is nearing completion.

Further work will include earthworks for utility networks and internal roads in the northeastern expansion area, as well as the construction of steel structural frames for the phytosanitary and veterinary inspection facilities.

EXISTING FACILITIES ALSO BEING UPGRADED
At the existing border station complex, electrical installations and indoor lighting works have been completed, along with the replacement of external window frames and glazing. External thermal insulation work remains under way.

Repairs to plasterwork and waterproofing on the roofs of the existing external canopies are also in progress.

AIM TO IMPROVE CROSS-BORDER TRAFFIC
Kellis said the upgrade project was progressing at full pace, with the objective of creating modern, functional facilities, improving traffic movement and reducing waiting times for both passengers and freight vehicles.

The project is intended to modernise one of the road border crossings serving traffic between Greece and Türkiye. No completion date was specified in the report.
