Train services resume on Evros (Meriç) railway line after technical upgrades

Train services along the Evros (Meriç) railway corridor have officially resumed after a temporary suspension, restoring a key regional transport link in northeastern Greece.

According to an announcement by Hellenic Train, services on the Alexandroupoli–Orestiada–Ormenio line restarted on Sunday, May 31, 2026, following the completion of technical upgrades along the route.

Services Return to Normal Schedule
Rail operations on the Meriç line are now running according to the standard timetable, reconnecting several towns in the region and restoring regular passenger mobility.

The route includes key stops between Dedeağaç, Kumçiftliği (Orestiada), and Çirmen, which is located near the Greek-Bulgarian border.

Technical Works Completed on Rail Infrastructure
Authorities confirmed that the resumption of services became possible after the completion of infrastructure maintenance and system upgrades along the railway network.

A key component of the upgrade involved the installation and calibration of the HEPOS geolocation and positioning system used in railway operations, which was necessary to ensure safe and efficient train movement along the line.

Regional Connectivity Restored
The reopening of the Meriç railway line is expected to significantly improve daily transportation options for residents, particularly those relying on rail services for intercity and cross-border travel.

Local communities have welcomed the resumption of services, noting that the railway provides an important and affordable mobility option in a region where road distances between settlements can be substantial.

The restoration of the line is also seen as an important step in maintaining transport connectivity in Greece’s northeastern border region, which plays a strategic role in both domestic mobility and regional logistics networks.
