Hristodoulos Topsidis, Regional Director of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT), along with his delegation, visited Smolyan Governor Zahari Shirakov in Bulgaria on December 11, 2024, for a working meeting.

During the visit, the delegation was warmly received by Governor Shirakov. The discussions focused on strengthening and expanding cooperation between the EMT region and Smolyan Province. Governor Shirakov referenced the expectations created by Bulgaria's entry into the Schengen area and highlighted its positive long-term impact on bilateral relations.

Topsidis emphasized the significant tourist flow from Bulgaria to Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, mentioning developments in the tourism and real estate sectors and the opportunities created by improved road links between the two countries. He noted that "development in cross-border regions is mutually beneficial" and shared that the DMT region could offer valuable advantages and best practices in return for Smolyan's experience in winter tourism, water management, and the development of mountainous areas.

Governor Shirakov thanked Topsidis for the visit and discussed the new cooperation opportunities arising from Bulgaria's Schengen entry in fields like tourism, culture, entrepreneurship, and education. He expressed optimism about improving the daily lives and living standards of citizens in both regions, while acknowledging the responsibilities that local governments bear in meeting citizens' needs. "By working well together, we will be more successful," he concluded.
