Tobacco Production accounts for 42 million Euros in Western Thrace
Eastern-type tobacco production increased in Western Thrace and especially in Rodopi province. But the tobacco price remained stable.
Respect to the data of Tobacco Growers Cooperative of Thrace, tobacco production in 2016 was about 7 million kilograms. In 2017 eastern-type tobacco production climbed approximately to 8 million kilograms which account for 15,60 per cent increase.
Despite that, the average price of tobacco remained the same as the price of the previous year which was 5,17 euro per kilogram. After 2010 there was an increasing trend of the average price of tobacco until the peak of 2016.
As a result of the increase of production the aggregate income of tobacco growers reached to 41,793,555 euro which is the highest income obtained from the selling. Comparing with the previous season’s aggregate income which was 30.088.125, the increase is 39 per cent.
Western Thrace is an important producer of the Eastern type of tobacco which is one of the high-priced types. In Rodopi tobacco is farmed approximately on 60 thousand acres of land, and with respect to the data of Hellenic Statistical Authority.
