The project for irrigation of the Xanthi plain planned to be ready in 36 months
It will provide irrigation to approximately 56 thousand hectares of land belonging to the plain of Xanthi. The BII phase of the International Tender for the signing of the contract for the project "Water transport and distribution from the river Karasu to the plain of Xanthi", carried out in cooperation with the Minister of Rural Development and Food Konstantinos Tsiaras, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Dionysis Stamenitis and the Secretary General for EU Resources and Infrastructure of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food Dimitris Papagiannidis, has been published.
It was stated that 51 million euros of the project, which will cost a total of 170 million euros, will be financed from the State Recovery Fund. It was noted that the tender for the second phase of the Xanthi plain irrigation project, which is the biggest project ever realized in the region, has been published.
The project is expected to be completed within 36 months.With the completion of the Karasu irrigation project, the eastern plain of Xanthi from Karasu will be irrigated with water from the Okçular Dam. The project also envisages the creation of a network that will irrigate approximately 56 thousand hectares of the Xanthi plain.

The network of irrigation canals will reach the regions of Mirodato, Bulustra, Veloni, Mandra and Pezula.
The President of the Province of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Topsidis, commenting on the signing of the second phase of the tender, said: "The development of the Primary Sector is a top priority for us. This project, which will be implemented in the prefecture of Xanthi, guarantees the strengthening of this sector.It is also a response to the need to adapt to climate change and its challenges.
With the completion of the project, 56 thousand hectares of clean agricultural land will be irrigated. It will benefit more than 5 thousand farmers in the regions of Mirodatou, Avdira, Veloni, Mandra and Pezoula.
Agricultural activities in this region are at risk due to water shortages. With this major project, our farmers in the region will be able to irrigate their crops easily, so that the increase in their crops will earn them more.
The implementation phase of this project will make a great contribution to the agricultural development in our region, especially in Xanthi.In short, a new page will be opened for the agricultural sector in Xanthi.
