The number of council members in municipalities reduced

According to the new data, Topiros municipal council is losing 8, Xanthi city council 6, Bulustra (Avdira) and Mustafçova (Miki) municipalities are losing two seats each.
The municipal elections to be held on 8 October 2023 bring many innovations and changes.
The upcoming municipal elections were shaped by the results of the census held in 2021.
According to these data, Topiros Municipality population decreased from 11,544 to 9,473 people. Therefore the number of municipal council members decreased from 27 to 19.
According to ELSTAT's data, Xanthi Municipality with a population of 66,875 will be able to elect 35 councilors, Bulustra Municipality with a population of 17,610 will be able to elect 25, Mustafçova Municipality with a population of 14,237 will be able to elect 25, and Topiros Municipality with a population of 9,473 will be able to elect 19 council members.
Despite the decrease in the number of municipal council members, according to the Law No. 5027/2003, there is a significant increase in the number of nominations.
A list that will participate in the elections will be able to nominate candidates by increasing the number of council members by one hundred and fifty percent.
According to the same law, on the other hand, the rate of nomination in local councils is reduced from 80 percent to 60 percent. For example, a municipality with 6 local councils must also nominate candidates on at least 60 percent of each list. In other words, it has to nominate candidates in at least 4 local councils. Otherwise, the list will be invalid.
There is no change in the fact that 40 percent of the candidates in the lists must be women.
MOVE FROM THE UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES
The Greek Union of Municipalities KEDE called for the 8 October municipal and state elections to be held according to the 2011 census results. However, it was noted that it is difficult for the government to make changes in this regard.
