Parliamentary question by Zeybek for firewood

Hüseyin Zeybek, New Left MP for Xanthi, asked the government to provide the residents of Mustafçova (Miki) Municipality with enough firewood. Zeybek submitted a parliamentary question to the Ministry of Environment and Energy on the issue.

MP Hüseyin Zeybek, in his parliamentary question, stated the following: 

The municipality of Mustafçova, with a population of approximately 15.000 permanent inhabitants, is located in the mountainous region of Xanthi Prefecture. In the winter months the temperature drops below zero degrees centigrade and frost occurs.

In this period of the current energy crisis, inflation and high fuel prices, the geographical location of the municipality increases the need of the inhabitants of Mustafcova for firewood for heating.

Unfortunately the state rarely responds to these needs. In this context, another unpleasant surprise was the news that only 2 m³ of firewood will be provided to the inhabitants of Mustafcova Municipality from the cuts carried out by the authorised Xanthi Forestry Directorate for maintenance purposes in the forests. In addition, the financial support provided by the ministry for the felling this year is only 130.000 Euros."

Stating that the amount of firewood allocated to the residents of the municipality is far from meeting the needs, Zeybek continued as follows: 

"The fact that the number of applications for firewood in Mustafcova Municipality is over 2000 shows that the amount of firewood to be given and the financial allowance is insufficient to meet the needs of the beneficiaries. 

It should be reminded that last year the allowance given to Mustafcova Municipality by the ministry under the same programme was 180.000 Euros, while this year it is only 130.000 Euros. 

It should also be noted that the amount of firewood that the inhabitants of Mustafcova Municipality received in the past was 5 m³. 

This injustice against the inhabitants of Mustafcova Municipality should be immediately reconsidered by the state. 

The fact that the neighbouring villages in the Stavroupoli region received 7 m³, while the municipality of Mustafcova with a population of 15,000 received only 2 m³ is a proof of injustice." 

Zeybek asked the following questions to the ministry: 

"- What initiatives do you plan to take in order to eliminate this injustice against the inhabitants of Mustafçova Municipality and to allocate the financial allowance and the amount of firewood from the Forestry Department of Xanthi to the rightful owners due to the severe winter months?

- What other measures does the government plan to take in order to meet the needs of the citizens in the region of Xanthi, especially in Mustafcova Municipality, which is located at high altitude, taking into account the increasing fuel prices due to the energy crisis?"
