İskeçe and Mustafçova Municipalities protest closure of ELTA post offices
Both municipal councils unanimously decided to issue official statements condemning the closures and calling for the protection of postal services in the region.
The İskeçe Municipal Council emphasized that shutting down the Yeniköy (Stavroupoli) ELTA branch would directly harm residents living in remote and mountainous areas. The council described the decision as “socially harmful and a step backward for the region,” noting that ELTA’s presence is vital for the elderly and other vulnerable groups who rely on postal services for essential needs.
“The Şahin Branch Must Not Close”
The Mustafçova Municipality also issued a protest statement highlighting ELTA’s nationwide plan to close 204 branches, with 46 already shut down in the first phase. The council stressed that closing the Şahin branch would create serious difficulties for the local population, many of whom depend on the post office for basic services such as bill payments and pension collection, especially in mountainous settlements.
Both municipalities called for the complete cancellation of the closure plan, insisting that all ELTA branches in the İskeçe region remain operational. They urged ELTA to prioritize social benefit over economic considerations when making decisions.
The İskeçe Municipality also announced that it is prepared to cooperate with ELTA—if necessary by contributing to certain operating expenses—to ensure the continued operation of the Yeniköy (Stavroupoli) branch.
The municipalities stated that their demands will be formally submitted to ELTA’s administration.
