Thassos residents reject CO2 storage plan

Residents of Thassos voiced strong opposition to a proposed carbon dioxide storage project during a regional council session in Gümülcine (Komotini) on April 29.

The presence of island residents marked the accountability meeting of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, where they gathered to protest against a recent committee opinion approving environmental terms for the investment.

Strong local opposition

Protesters made clear their demand: the project should not go ahead in Thassos. They argue that the plan ignores the will of local communities and raises concerns about environmental and social impacts.

According to residents, the regional administration’s stance effectively promotes business interests and corporate profits, while overlooking the clear opposition expressed by the people of the island.

Growing tension over investment

The issue has intensified tensions between local communities and regional authorities, highlighting broader debates over environmental protection, economic development and public consent in major energy projects.
