Swift response prevents major wildfire in Rhodope region

A rapid response by firefighting forces prevented a potentially major wildfire on Saturday in the Rhodope region of northeastern Greece, authorities said.

The fire broke out in a rural-forest area near Karakurcalı (Palaia Krovylis) , between the villages of Krovylis and Dioni in the municipality of Maroneia-Sapes, and spread risk was elevated due to strong winds in the area.

Firefighting operations involved five aircraft, 42 firefighters with 10 vehicles, and two foot patrol units from Greece’s 7th Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE), who managed to bring the blaze under control before it could expand significantly.

Local water tankers and earthmoving equipment from the regional unit of Rhodope, the municipality, and private contractors also supported the effort.

Authorities said that over the past 24 hours, 41 wildfires were recorded across Greece, with 30 contained quickly and 11 still under active response at the time of reporting.
